Jungle Island is expanding! Back in 2018 Miami voters approved this move, and at the end of 2020, The Miami Planning and Zoning Appeals Board approved a special area plan proposal to develop a 300-room hotel, additional attractions, and a retail complex. The developer will also renovate and expand the existing conference center and screen the parking garage with vines and other organic materials, plus add a sculpted garden atop that structure.
In addition to driving tourism, the Jungle Island expansion will benefit Miami in that the development’s rent will increase drastically, from $250,000 in annual rent to a base rent of $1.2 million annually once the hotel is built, plus 5% of gross revenues. The proposed public benefits would also include $650,000 for affordable housing.
I love Jungle Island, though I must admit that I loved the old Parrot Jungle on Red Road even more! Having grown up in Miami, that was the Parrot Jungle of my childhood and I will never forget being awed by the roller-skating cockatoos and the talking macaws!
