Considered to be Miami’s oldest bar, Tobacco Road opened in approximately 1915 and was shuttered in 2014. Like any Miamian of a certain age, I spent many a night (or, dare I say, early morning!) at The Road, as it was affectionately known. It was a dive bar with great music, seating inside and out, cold beer, and good food right in the heart of downtown Miami!
Although it has been closed for six years, Tobacco Road was an institution and it is still missed, which is why a pop-up version is in the works for 2021. So far the project is called A Tribute to Tobacco Road, and it is being spearheaded by The Road’s Patrick Gleber and Matt Kuscher of Kush Hospitality. It is slated be located in The River Oyster Bar’s old location, which is so close to the old Tobacco Road! Fear not River fans – they are moving, not closing! A Tribute to Tobacco Road is not a done deal, but it sure would be fun if it happened! While I might not stay at bars until the wee hours any longer, I will definitely want to check out A Tribute to Tobacco Road when and if it opens next year!
