South Miami is about to have a massive transformation through the development of the old shops at Sunset Place. What was once a thriving entertainment and shopping center will soon be replaced by a new and improved mixed-use complex that promises something brand new for South Miami.
For both residents and visitors alike, this could be the long awaited revitalization of downtown South Miami that offers a more walkable, livable, and economically thriving community.

Led by Midtown Opportunities and designed by Heatherwick Studios, this newly approved development will include seven towers that range from 12 to 33 stories.
It will include 1,513 residences, a 287 room hotel, office spaces, restaurants, retail shops, a movie theater that can seat 1,300 people, and 2,418 parking spaces. Located on the corner of Sunset Drive, Red Road, and U.S. 1—just across from the University of Miami, this will be a central area for the residents of South Miami.
Construction is planned to take place in phases, with the first (infrastructure, a condo building, and a hotel), expected to begin in 2029. Prior to that construction, condo sales are expected to launch in the coming months once a permit for demolition in early 2026 is approved. With strict requirements, this project will have to reach $300 million property value by 2034 or the developer may lose approval for the tallest towers.
Located at 5701 Sunset Drive, this site has seen multiple failed redevelopment efforts. This time around however, city officials and developers believe things will be different.
If successful, Sunset Place could mark a new era for one of Miami-Dade’s most charming neighborhoods.
