Did you hear that the Miami Marlins have hired the first female general manager in Major League Baseball’s history? Not only that, but by appointing Kim Ng as the team’s GM, they are the first major league men’s sports franchise in North America to hire a woman to run the show. And run the show she will, as a general manager’s duties include making trades, negotiating contracts, and running the draft. It is quite the position!
Ng has worked in baseball for 30 years, starting as an intern for the Chicago White Sox, and working her way up to the assistant general manager at both the Yankees and Dodgers, plus a stint as Major League Baseball’s senior vice president of baseball operations. That is a resume that anyone in professional sports would be proud of, but it must have been doubly hard climb that ladder as a woman in what is genuinely a boy’s club.
I am proud of the Marlins for taking the plunge and hiring Kim Ng as their general manager. Now I just hope that we can all go to a baseball game next season!
