Miami Landmark Norman Brothers is Closing

After over 50 years, Norman Brothers Produce is going to close its doors for good. The market, located at 7621 SW 87th Avenue, and known for delicious milkshakes, prepared foods, exceptional produce, and great weekend barbeque, sits on a five acre plot of land that was recently re-zoned to allow for the building of an assisted-living facility.

While selling the land to GC3 Development and shuttering the thriving business was a hard decision, the Norman Brothers ownership group felt like it was the right time to do so. General manager Susan Suggs told the Miami New Times, “In all these years, none of us has had a Christmas Eve at home or a Saturday morning with family — we're always here," Suggs says. "It's a lot of work, and there isn't a second generation coming in behind us. As we're getting older, it's the right time to plan for what's ahead.” Although I hate to see a local business that I have grown up with shutting its doors, it sounds like this was the right choice for the ownership team to make at this time. I have not seen the sale price in the tax rolls or other public records, but surely a piece of land that large in that location netted them a great profit.

I will definitely have to head over to Norman Brothers for a last strawberry shake or two!
