People are Squawking about Bird Bikes!

The Grove has always had a fun vibe and I have noticed a fun, new way to get around. Known as “Bird Bikes,” this new form of transportation is actually in Downtown Miami and Brickell in addition to Coconut Grove. So what are Bird Bikes? They are scooters that are made to help reduce the parking issues in these areas. To use them, you must first download their app, locate a scooter using the in-app GPS feature, then you scan one and go! There is a $1.00 rental fee, plus a fee of $0.15 per minute as you ride. Once you are done riding, you can just leave the bike where it is and at the end of each day an attendant collects and charges the Bird Bikes overnight before returning them to the “wild” the next day.

Although the birds are fun, they have regulations. For example, a rider must be at least 18 and he or she must have a valid driver’s license. The law also states that you have to wear a helmet while riding these, although I have yet to see anyone wear one. Overall, the goals of these scooters are to make all these areas more fun, and eventually to reduce the amount of parking issues. I love this creative way of solving one of our age old problems. Hopefully it works and can be a productive solution to parking, while providing a fun way to get around!

Little Free Library

I was recently driving to my listing at 4360 Ingraham Highway and I had to stop when I came across just about the cutest thing I have ever seen, a Little Free Library. As you can see in the picture above, it almost looks like a bird house sitting in someone’s front yard, but instead of seed it was filled with books! Readers are welcome to borrow a book or leave one of their own – what a clever idea!

It’s hard to see in my picture, but the Little Free Library has a sticker on the front promoting its website littlefreelibrary.org and these lending libraries are not unique to Coconut Grove, they are actually all over the world. You can build one, register it, and start loaning books right from your front yard. I love this because it promotes literacy and because we all have books lying around that we might as well put to good use. Books, check ‘em out!

The Future is Here in Miami

Did you know that Ford is testing self-driving cars in Miami? The company announced that Miami is going to be the first large-scale testing site of its driver-less fleet of cars. Why Miami, you ask? Well, the city has very challenging traffic but other factors like, “its weather, its variety of driving environments — from its densely packed downtown to its more residential exurbs — and the receptiveness of city officials to the new technology,” according to the Miami Herald.

There will be two fleets of self-driving cars hitting our streets, one group will be mapping and perfecting the technology and the other is going to deliver pizzas! Ford has paired up with Domino’s to test that service: I think it will be interesting for my gluten-free pizza to be delivered without the delivery man.

Ford is not giving too many specifics, so we do not really know exactly when the driver-less fleets are going to roll out, nor do we know exactly where the cars will be housed. What we do know is that there will be a human inside of these cars just in case something goes wrong, which I think is a smart idea.

If driver-less cars are going to help with Miami’s traffic, then I am happy for our city to be Ford’s guinea pig. What do you think about this new technology?

The Miami Open Moves

I have always loved the Miami Open and proud that it is often considered the “fifth Grand Slam.” While I am not able to spend every day at the tennis tournament and usually only make it out one day, it has been such a treat to have it in our back yard on Key Biscayne. I am sure many of the residents find it to be a major inconvenience when we all descend upon their community, but what a beautiful setting to spend the day or week while watching the most elite tennis players in the world strut their stuff.

Unfortunately for me, and I believe Miami, the Miami Open is moving to Hard Rock Stadium in 2019. While I do like the stadium, and feel that the improvements that have been made are magnificent, it is not a convenient, stunning drive to the Hard Rock. Rather, it is an aggressive slog on I-95 – quite different than the lovely Rickenbacker Causeway.

I know that the Hard Rock Stadium, with its new, modern upgrades, will be a wonderful place to host a tennis tournament, and I wish them well. I am sure that I will make my way up there to watch tennis in 2019. In the meantime, I am going to take in as many matches as I can at the 2018 Miami Open while it is still on Key Biscayne! Tennis anyone?

FPL’s Coconut Grove-Galloway Project

FPL is in the process of replacing the poles that support the power lines running along Ponce de Leon Boulevard from Red Road all the way to Douglas and Bird roads. Dubbed the Coconut Grove-Galloway project, this effort is designed to strengthen the power grid by installing taller, stronger poles, thereby making power restoration faster and more efficient after a major storm. At the outset of the project, people complained that the taller poles were going to be an eye sore, but after spending many, many power-less days after Irma, I am hoping that what seems to be inevitable becomes a positive.

I actually called FPL to ask them about the project and how much longer they expect it to take. They could not give me any definitive completion date because they said that their resources are still spread thin after the hurricane. Although that was sort of a non-answer, I have to say that I was impressed by FPL’s responsiveness on the phone. I called and someone immediately picked up. When I told him that I wanted more information about the Coconut Grove-Galloway project, he told me that he was not the right person to give me that information but that he would have someone call me. I rolled my eyes upon hanging up because surely they would never call me back! Five minutes later the power company proved me wrong because Miguel rang and told me all that he could about the new power poles on Ponce. Nice work, FPL!

I am sorry for that little digression, but I really was impressed. I hope that the Coconut Grove-Galloway pole installation project delivers on its promises and makes power restoration a breeze in the future.

Early 2018 is the Time to Buy a New Home

As a Realtor, mortgage rates are always something of which I want to be aware. In this business, many of my buyers borrow money, which makes sense because they are, quite often, making the biggest purchases of their lives! Also, the cost to borrow has been so low for so long.

Well, what I am telling my buyers now is that early 2018 is the time to buy a new home whether you live here in Miami or elsewhere in the country. Why? Because mortgage rates are expected to rise over the course of this year. We have been hearing this for years, but it seems now really is the time. According to Kiplinger.com, they will not be drastic: a 30-year fixed rate loan will increase by approximately half of a point. However, when you are making a big purchase, like that of a new house, any increase can feel significant! In an article published by Shamrock Financial in 2015 it recognizes that for “every 0.5% increase in interest rate your purchasing power may be decreased by 4 to 5 percent,” and “for every 1% rate increase, your purchasing power may be decreased by 9 to 11 percent.”

If you are ready to purchase a new home, then you might as well do it now. Now that we are in the New Year, fresh inventory is coming on the market so there is ample opportunity to find your dream home! Lock that property down while interest rates are still a bargain and enjoy those interest savings for years to come.

It’s Time For Your Homeowners Insurance Annual Checkup

It’s one of those documents most of us stash in a safe or in an out-of-the-way place, the document that you value and simultaneously avoid, your homeowners or renter’s insurance policy. We were all just reminded by Hurricane Irma that it is important to locate your policy and give it a read. The fact is, it’s time for your homeowner’s insurance policy’s annual checkup!

Why? Here are just a few reasons:

  • Type of coverage. Is it ACV or Replacement cost? ACV stands for “actual cash value” which means depreciation is deducted in the event of loss.
  • Liability limits.
  • Accurate inventory. As your possessions come and go, they need to be reflected in the policy. This is where over-insuring is most commonly spotted.
  • Deductible. The amount of deductible in your Miami homeowners or renter’s policy is where you can reap significant savings…if you are willing to absorb more of the expense should a loss occur.
  • Discount. If you have more than one type of insurance policy with the same company or are a long-term customer with few claims, you might qualify.

I know this isn’t the fun topic people want to think or read about, but we, in South Florida, know how important it is!
