I had showings on Miracle Mile today, which is, of course, the pedestrian core of Coral Gables. Walking to my various appointments I saw – and this is not an exaggeration! – dozens of people holding their phones at eye level muttering things like “found one!” and “got you!” as they captured Pokémon. It was utterly bizarre but kind of cool! No one was watching where they walked, but everyone was smiling, and human beings were actually interacting with one another, as well as with their phones.
While I am not going to jump on the Pokémon Go train any time soon, I think it is a fascinating phenomenon. It is sort of a paradox, really. Players are looking at their screens but are also hanging out with their friends in person, and not just on Facebook. They are also playing a video game as they walk around in the fresh air and sunshine, which is definitely novel.
I am not sure if Pokémon Go is just a flash in the pan, but it is a fun summertime distraction. Please be careful when you are playing, though, and be sure to stop by my open houses so I can tell you where to find the nearest character to capture!
