Tomorrow is voting day in Florida, and while I would never presume to tell you which presidential candidate to vote for (ugh!), I will try to influence you to vote “yes” to Miami’s Riverside Wharf. This is a $30 million, privately-funded project to improve the eastern portion of the Miami River and the reason that it is being put up to vote is because it will utilize ¾ of an acre of public land. Personally, I think that is a small price to spruce up downtown Miami.
When I heard about this potential project, which is being spearheaded by developers Alex Mantecon and Guillermo Vadell, I was initially concerned about Garcia’s Fish Market, a restaurant that we love to frequent by boat. However, the plan is actually going to give the Garcia family more business in the form of a raw bar, plus it will attract more restaurants, many of whom will surely use Garcia’s fleet of fishermen for their fresh catch of the day.
Once completed, Miami’s Riverside Wharf will include four restaurants, a fish market, an outdoor plaza for events, and it will have 1,000 parking spaces at or near the complex so that people can actually use it. This will certainly make the Miami River a more happening place and will draw tourist and local dollars to the area. A good thing!
If this project was to be funded publically I might not weigh in so heavily on the “pro” side of the argument, but I have to say that because it is privately funded, I see little downside for our community. I hope that you agree with me and that you vote yes tomorrow! Hey, at least there is one good thing on the ballot!
